CentOS 7.4 1708: Red Hat released it Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 on 1th August 2017. Of course, as I mentioned, since then I've been waiting (and probably all friends of the distro) for the upcoming CentOS 'Release Point', which means that the major version of a distribution (in this case CentOS Linux 7) is updated to version 4 by Red Hat source code.
As I mentioned in the release of Red Hat's new release, CentOS friends will have to wait around a month to update the distribution.
Actually according to a CentOS blog post, the upcoming version of CentOS Linux 7 (1708) is already on the developers screens. Let's mention that the Red Hat source code has updated distribution in about 700 packages.
So the upcoming version of CentOS 7.4 1708 should have the corresponding updates. The procedure followed by CentOS Project for each new release is as follows:
When there is a new version of the RHEL 7 source code, the public version of the source code goes up on the CentOS git server (git.centos.org). They then use a published set of tools to create RPM sources from the git source code. This is how the development of the CentOS Linux update will begin. A program called mock is used to create binary RPM bundles from SRPMs.
The CentOS operating system is developed by a community of open source contributors. Typically the users of CentOS are companies and individuals who do not need strong commercial support for their operating system.
CentOS is a 100% compatible rebuild Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which fully complies with Red Hat distribution requirements. CentOS is for those who need stability in a business class operating system without the cost of certification and support.
According to published on 4 August 2017, until this date they had 574 packages completed out of the approximately 700 SRPMs required for the update. Let us mention that it will be the largest number of updated packages that will be released after the official announcement.
After development is complete a new repo will appear, for the necessary beta testing. The address where the repository and media will appear installationwill be: mirror.centos.org. It will be in a folder called 7.4.1708.
Package release announcements.
To add it CR (Continuous Release (CR) repository) use the command:
