The CentOS Linux 8 series of operating systems ceased to be supported on December 31, 2021. It is time to install an alternative distribution such as Rocky linux or AlmaLinux OS.
We say goodbye to the CentOS Linux 8 distribution after it stopped supporting on the last day of 2021, December 31st. This means it will no longer receive security updates, making your facility vulnerable to attack.
CentOS Linux is a GNU / Linux distribution built with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux commercial operating system packages. CentOS Linux 8 was first released just two years ago, on September 24, 20219, and is supposed to be updated for 10 years, until 2029.
One year ago, on December 8, 2020, Red Hat he said that will stop the CentOS 8 series at the end of 2021, focusing on their development in a new development platform called CentOS Stream.
But according to Red Hat, CentOS Stream is not an alternative to CentOS Linux 8 or any other supported CentOS Linux series. So it's time to switch to another free alternative operating system, such as Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux OS.
Both Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux OS are great open source, server-oriented alternatives to CentOS 8. Of course, before you decide which distribution to use, make sure you have a backup of your most important files!
To migrate from CentOS 8 to Rocky Linux, you can use a free tool called migrate2rocky, following the migration instructions provided by the Rocky Linux development team here.
To migrate from CentOS 8 to AlmaLinux OS, you can use a free tool called almalinux-deploy, following the migration instructions provided by the AlmaLinux OS development team here.
Both distributions provide full support as well as many other additional features that were not available in the CentOS 8 operating system.
