These systems generate and interact with a large amount of data, and this Linux.com article refers more broadly to CERN's computing infrastructure. It is not yet known whether the migration to Debian will cover the entire server infrastructure or the systems that rely on scientific research.

CERN had long used RHEL/CentOS, and maintained the Scientific Linux RHEL derivative distribution. It later moved to CentOS in 2015, and then to CentOS Stream.

CERN reports that Red Hat's adoption of the "-march=x86-64-v2" compiler flag by default, which it considers a "forced obsolescence" of older hardware, was the final straw.

Those who know Debian will agree that it is a very stable distribution, although difficult for novice users, but also the basis of many similar distributions, see Ubuntu , Mint , MX Linux and others.
