Have you used Facebook in the United States in the last 16 years? You may be one of tens of millions of users who can file a claim for compensation from the largest social network.
Current or former Facebook users can now file for damages as part of a $725 million settlement reached in a treatment which claims the company, owned by Meta, shared its users' data without their consent.
The news broke in 2018 when the company Cambridge Analytica took data from up to 87 million Facebook users through a personality quiz app. This led to lawsuits in several cases — which were consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in 2018. All related to the company's data privacy practices. The plaintiffs alleged that Facebook granted third parties access to the content and information of users without their consent. Meta denied any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement in December to avoid the costs and risks of continuing the case.
The deal received a preliminary approval from a federal judge in late March, and a final approval hearing is set for September.
In December, Keller Rohrback, one of the law firms representing the plaintiffs, called the settlement "the largest settlement ever made in a class action lawsuit." protectionς της ιδιωτικής ζωής στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες”. Η Meta δήλωσε ότι ο διακανονισμός ήταν “προς συμφέρον της κοινότητάς μας και των μετόχων μας” και ότι η εταιρεία “έχει ανανεώσει την προσέγγισή της στο privacy".
