August 16, 2026 was the day that the universal Debian GNU/Linux operating system and the community-supported Debian Project, founded by Ian Murdock, turned 33 years old.
Yes, it has been 33 years since Ian Murdock announced the Debian Project on August 16, 1993 and the initial release of Debian GNU/Linux a month later, on September 15, in an effort to develop a so-called “Universal Operating System”.
33 years later, Debian is used by millions of users around the world, either directly using the Debian GNU/Linux operating system or using one of its many derivatives, such as the very popular Ubuntu or Linux Mint distributions.

“Today is also an opportunity for you to start or continue your contributions to Debian. For example, you can install the how-can-i-help package and see if there is a bug in any of the software you use that you can fix, contribute small tips on how to install Debian on your machines to the wiki pages, or put a live Debian image on a USB stick and give it to a friend who hasn't discovered Debian yet,” the Debian Project says.
Meanwhile, developers from the Debian Project continue to develop the current and future versions of the Debian GNU/Linux operating system. The next major update will be Debian 14 “Forky”, expected to be released in July or August 2027. The latest stable release is currently Debian GNU/Linux 13.6.
