Cloudflare sponsors Ladybird web browser

In a somewhat unexpected move, Cloudflare announced its sponsorship of Ladybird browser, an independent (still under development) open source initiative that aims to develop a modern, autonomous web browser.

It is a project started by GitHub co-founder and former CEO Chris Wanstrath and technology visionary Andreas Kling. It is written in C++ and designed to be fast, standards-compliant, and free of external dependencies.

Its main advantage? Unlike most alternative browsers today, Ladybird doesn't rely on Chromium or WebKit. Instead, it builds an entirely new rendering engine from scratch, which is rare in today's web landscape. For example, the vast majority of web traffic is currently served by engines developed by Google (Blink/Chromium), Apple ( WebKit ), and Mozilla (Gecko).

The sponsorship means the Ladybird team will have more resources to accelerate development. This includes paying developers to work on critical features such as JavaScript support, performance improvements and compatibility with modern web applications. Cloudflare said its support is part of a broader initiative to keep the internet open, where competition and multiple applications can lead to improved security, performance and innovation.

Cloudflare also chose to fund Omarchy, a tool that runs on Arch and configures and configures a Hyprland tiling window manager, along with a curated set of presets and developer tools, such as Neovim, Docker, and Git.
