Copilot reads your emails to summarize them

Artificial Intelligence is penetrating every aspect of our lives. Of course, there are organizations that are adopting its latest tools. But while there are AI tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot that can be very useful, there are also updates that contain bugs that are nightmares for corporate customers' privacy.

A recent advisory posted to Microsoft's admin portal suggests that Copilot (in the Cloud) is reading your confidential emails as it summarizes messages for you. This is a massive privacy and security breach, as data loss prevention (DLP) policies, such as privacy labels, are specifically designed to limit scenarios like these.

• Microsoft 365 Copilot sends your documents to OneDrive

Microsoft says this was an unintended behavior and was due to a programming error. It primarily affected emails in the Sent and Drafts folders, which were sent to Copilot Chat for content summarization. This issue was first discovered by customers on January 21, 2026, and is being tracked under the ID CW1226324.

The bad news is that despite the fact that this is a fairly serious security flaw, Microsoft has not yet patched it. It began rolling out a patch gradually since February 10, but it has not yet reached all affected customers. The Redmond company is notifying affected customers and testing the measures it has taken to ensure that the update works as expected.

We are currently awaiting a full incident report, and some update. Of course, such bugs do not make organizations happy, many of whom pay large sums to use Copilot in their environments.
