Copilot Vision sends data for analysis to Microsoft servers

Microsoft is adding fuel to the fire with Artificial Intelligence in Windows 11, releasing a successor to Controversial Recall, a program that sends your data for remote processing. The cool new idea-app is called Copilot Vision.

“Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we use our computers,” claims Microsoft , and while some might agree, not everyone would say it’s changing our lives for the better.

“Windows 11 is the home of AI,” he adds, “delivering the most extensive and capable AI experiences for consumers today on Copilot+ PCs – with exclusive AI apps like Recall, improved Windows search, and groundbreaking new ways to interact with your PC, like Copilot Vision in Windows.”

Copilot Vision is an extension of Microsoft's controversial Recall , a feature exclusive (for now) to Copilot+ systems with a neural coprocessor of sufficient computing power. Like Recall, which was initially withdrawn due to serious security concerns, Copilot Vision is designed to analyze everything you do on your computer.

This is achieved, when enabled, by continuously capturing screenshots and feeding them to an optical character recognition system that works with a language model for analysis. But while Recall works locally, Copilot Vision sends the data to Microsoft servers.

Microsoft's vision for Vision is, in the words of the Copilot team, to eventually become "a true companion," offering "a deeper understanding of your goals and the ability to provide clear, step-by-step guidance to help you achieve them."

Screen monitoring will only occur if the user explicitly requests it as part of a Copilot session, unlike Recall, which will run continuously in the background when enabled.

Microsoft is currently only making Copilot Vision available in the US, with the promise (or threat) that it will soon be released in very specific “non-European countries” – a hint that seems to be due to the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Law.
