The defenders of individual freedoms had every reason to celebrate after the European Court of Justice ruling yesterday, writes Deutsche Welle
Judges in Luxembourg, in a clear ruling, overturned a European directive from 2006 that required member states to store, for at least six months, data, όπως, ποιος μίλησε με ποιόν, για πόσο χρονικό διάστημα ή πόσα ηλεκτρονικά μηνύματα αντάλλαξαν.
The European judges, in a historic decision, as the German press calls it today, judged that the "European legislator overstepped the bounds during the version of the directive" as literally stated in the reasoning of the decision.
The relevant debate in Germany has been causing tensions in the public debate for years. Defenders of individual rights speak of a threatened total surveillance of citizens, while opponents argue that the ever-increasing crime on the Internet requires greater interferencefundamentals.
The decision is expected to re-ignite discussions in the EU member states as well as in Germany government, which has not yet passed a relevant law.
