If you thought the 184 million password leak we reported on in an earlier post was scary, I hope you're sitting down. Researchers have announced the largest data breach ever.
Researchers confirmed the biggest data breach ever, after 16 billion login credentials were leaked.
According to Vilius Petkauskas of Cybernews, whose researchers have been investigating the leak since the beginning of the year, “30 exposed datasets containing anywhere from tens of millions to over 3,5 billion files each” have been discovered. In total, the number of compromised files has now reached 16 billion.
The leak includes billions of login credentials from social media, VPNs, developer portals, and user accounts. It is noteworthy that none of these data sets have been reported hacked or leaked.
“This is not just a leak – this is a plan for mass exploitation,” the researchers say. And they’re right.
The passwords come from “almost any online service imaginable, from Apple, Facebook, and Google, to GitHub, Telegram, or various other government services.”
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
