Ο vim is a text editor created by Bram Moolenaar in 1991, originally for the Amiga operating system.
It is widespread and beloved, especially among Linux developers. Its creator, Bram Moolenaar, as announced by his family passed away on August 3, 2023.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that Bram Moolenaar passed away on August 3, 2023. Moolenaar was 62 years old and died of a medical condition that progressed rapidly over the last few weeks. Bram dedicated a large part of his life to VIM and was very proud of the VIM community that you are all a part of.”
Vim started in 1988 with version 1.0 (as an acronym for Vi IMitation), as an imitation of oldesty text editor Vi by well-known programmer Bill Joy (co-founder of Sun Microsystems, creator of the C Shell) for the Commodore Amiga operating system, which however was never publicly released.
The last stable version is 8.2 which was released on December 12, 2019
