New US President Donald Trump appears to have suggested that the soon-to-be-elected administration acquire half of social networking service TikTok.
This proposal came in a Sunday tweet by Trump in which he promised that once he takes office, he would issue an executive order extending the service's termination period.
Trump added that his initial thoughts on keeping TikTok available in the US involved “a joint venture between the current owners and/or new owners whereby the US would acquire 50%.”
“By doing this, we are saving TikTok, and we are keeping it in good hands. Without U.S. approval, there is no TikTok. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars – maybe trillions.” Trump also said that keeping the app makes sense, as “Americans deserve to see our exciting inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations.”
It should be noted that the Biden administration has stated that it will leave the decision on TikTok's fate to Trump, who in 2020 wanted to ban the app before leaving office.
It should also be remembered that Trump promised to reduce wasteful government spending. The new President's post does not explain how acquiring half of the social media company meets those goals or how the acquisition will be financed.
