Instead, users have to click two or even three times before the file opens.
Windows lets you customize whether opening files and folders requires one or two clicks, but this feature doesn't affect downloads in Microsoft Edge. Additionally, the error is intermittent, meaning that sometimes it takes two clicks, and sometimes it takes more – the browser just can't decide how many clicks are enough.
A disappointed one user on Reddit conducted a little research, which concluded that the bug was introduced by version 120 of Microsoft Edge. THE restitution in Microsoft Edge 119 fixed the situation. Microsoft Edge 121 is currently the latest version in the Stable Channel.
Hopefully, Microsoft will release a fix soon for those using the company's browser.
In the meantime, you can bypass the error by opening your downloads from edge://download.
