Edward Snowden fairy tale of the San Bernadino iPhone

Speaking at His "Blueprint for Democracy". Common Cause, Edward Snowden spoke about surveillance, personal freedoms and, of course, the San Bernadino iPhone.Edward Snowden

"The FBI says Apple has the 'exclusive technical means' to unlock the phone," said Edward Snowden. “Respectfully, that's bullshit.”

Edward Snowden posted a little later on twitter:

The link will take you to a quote by Daniel Kahn Gillmor of the American Civil Liberties Union that discusses the FBI's claim that it requires Apple's assistance to bypass it of "self-deletion".

Gillmor is not the only one. IOS researcher researcher Jonathan Zdziarski published a snapshot last week that describes in detail the FBI mistakes in the San Bernadino case.

In fact, security researchers have already suggested some other ways the FBI could violate the encrypted iPhone.

These methods are costly, time consuming and some could eventually lead to physical destruction of the device's memory, but they could bring results. Nobody mentioned alternatives to a hearing from Congress last week when FBI Director James Comey claimed that the FBI could not access the data without Apple's help.

Apart from the expensive and dangerous hacks, the CIA is another alternative. Of course the CIA never talks about such talks, but it's the same service that has been trying to break Apple's devices for almost a decade.

The San Bernardino iPhone is a pretext as the focus of the big picture shifts into the public debates it has created. It seems that from the back door the FBI actually wants a new law, not the iPhone of the terrorist.
