Stunning detail: A 10 billion pixel panorama of Vermeer's "Girl with the Pearl Earring"

Emilian Leonhard and Vicente Sabatier from Hirox Europe took part in an incredible project last year: they photographed the painting "The girl with the pearl earring»Vermeer in an incredible resolution, so that anyone can see the painting at the level of 4,4-microns per pixel.

The project was carried out in order to evaluate the surface condition of the panel, measure cracks and display the topography of various key areas, while evaluating previous restorations.

With their specialized equipment, the duo made what Leonard describes as the first panorama of 10 billion pixels (93.205 x 108.565). This equates to about 10.118 megapixels.

The work was done overnight, where 9.100 photos were automatically taken and stitched together to form a complete panoramic image where a pixel equals 4,4 microns. The resulting detail is really great.

Her microscope Hirox 3D can give specific parameters, then it will start autofocusing and taking detailed images of an area, and then output a final, properly focused final image. This image can then be used to give its researchers and historians an incredibly clear view of specific areas of a table.

The whole the project is available for full screen viewing on a website created by the duo and the 10 separate key areas further analyzed, allow even closer zoom.
