“January’s data shows that cyberattacks are growing and becoming more sophisticated,” said Omer Dembinsky , Data Research Manager at Check Point Research . “ Ransomware groups are accelerating their operations, while the rampant use of GenAI is creating new blind spots for organizations. Prevention, with real-time protection powered by AI , is the only effective defense against serious operational or financial damage.”

GenAI : New data breach risks – Education remains the most targeted sector

The rapid adoption of GenAI tools in organizations continues to create new avenues for sensitive data to leak. In January, 1 in 30 enterprise GenAI prompts contained a high risk of exposing critical information, affecting 93% of organizations using such tools. At the same time, organizations used an average of 10 different GenAI tools per month , many of which operate without oversight, increasing the potential for unauthorized data leakage, ransomware penetration , and AI - powered attacks.

The Education sector remained the most targeted globally, with an average of 4.364 weekly attacks per organization (+12% YoY ). This was followed by Government organizations with 2.759 weekly attacks (+8% YoY ) and Telecommunications with 2.647 attacks per week (+8% YoY ), reflecting the increasing targeting of connectivity infrastructure and 5G ecosystems.

Regionally, Latin America recorded the highest attack volumes with 3.110 attacks per week per organization (+33% YoY ). This was followed by Asia-Pacific ( APAC ) with 3.087 attacks (+7% YoY ), Africa with 2.864 (−6% YoY ), while Europe saw an 18% increase , and North America 19% year-on-year.

Ransomware : 10% increase year-on-year – North America & Europe in the spotlight

There were 678 known ransomware incidents in January , a 10% increase compared to January 2025.

North America accounted for 52% of the incidents, Europe 24 % , while the US alone accounted for 48% of global casualties.

The most targeted sectors:

  • Business Services (33%)

  • Consumer Goods & Services (15%)

  • Industrial Production (11%).

Top ransomware groups: Qilin (15%) , LockBit (12%) , Akira (9%).

Greece: Increased Exposure due to Targeted Sectors and Digital Transformation

The impact on Greece is becoming particularly critical, as the most targeted sectors internationally are largely aligned with the structure of the Greek economy. Government organizations and Telecommunications are consistently among the main targets of attacks, while the Consumer Goods & Services, Financial Services, Automotive and Business Services sectors also show increased exposure. Increasing digitalization, the interconnection of critical infrastructures and the rapid adoption of cloud and GenAI tools intensify the risk for organizations that manage sensitive data of citizens, customers and supply chains. This environment makes it imperative to adopt comprehensive cybersecurity strategies, with an emphasis on prevention, continuous threat visibility and the protection of critical services that support the functioning of the state and the economy.
