Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that the Autopilot it was not activated in the fatal Tesla crash which took place in Houston on Saturday.
“The archives recording data "Recoveries so far show that Autopilot was not activated," Musk said Monday afternoon.
The vehicle was dismantled, so it is not known if the data was intact. However, Tesla vehicles are connected online and this 2019 S model may have wirelessly transmitted some key data to Tesla servers seconds after the crash.
At the same tweet, Musk also mentioned that the vehicle's owner "didn't buy FSD." FSD is short for “full self-driving” (full self-driving). However, the current beta version of FSD still requires active driver supervision.
The police meanwhile are "almost 99,9% sure” that Tesla had no one at the wheel before accident.
Musk added that "the typical autopilot would require lanes that this road did not have."
Some have disputed this claim and a Tesla owner posted a video on Sunday which shows that he was able to activate Autopilot on a small road without markings. In fact, as his car approached a sharp turn, he did not appear to turn or slow down before the driver intervened.
