Lawyers representing Dr. Monarez said her firing was illegal and claimed she was targeted by Kennedy for refusing to “approve unscientific, reckless instructions.”

Kennedy is the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The New York Times also reports that he disagreed with Kennedy.

Other reports suggest she was given an ultimatum directly from Kennedy: stand by what she says about vaccines, as well as the Trump administration's updated vaccination programs, or resign.

On Wednesday, Dr. Monarez's lawyers issued a statement saying she had chosen "to protect the public rather than serve a political agenda."

And she wasn't alone. Several high-ranking CDC officials resigned after her firing in protest. CDC officials who didn't resign lined up outside their offices and applauded their former colleagues as they left the building.

Dimitris Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said recent policy changes on the COVID vaccine threatened lives and that there was a “deliberate erosion of trust in low-risk vaccines.” Other departing officials include CDC chief medical advisor Debra Houry and Daniel Jernigan, director of the CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.

This loss of expertise at the CDC is alarming. As is the revelation Daskalakis made during an interview with CNN on Thursday night.

Daskalakis, responding to a question about what Kennedy should be asked if he were to appear at a Senate hearing, said: “Has he ever been briefed by a CDC expert on anything? Specifically, on measles, COVID-19, the flu? I think they should ask him that.”

“The answer is no. No one from my center has ever briefed him on any of these issues. He is getting information from somewhere, but that information is not coming from CDC experts, who are really the world experts in this area. Maybe he has alternative experts that he can trust more than the CDC experts who the rest of the world considers to be the best scientists in these areas.”
