Eni HPC5 the most powerful computer system in the world

Eni HPC5: Dell Technologies is at the heart of the world's most powerful industrial supercomputer, the HPC5, recently launched in Eni Green Data Center.

The motivation for the ενός συστήματος ασφαλούς για το περιβάλλον και με βιώσιμη απόδοση για το μέλλον, έφερε σε Dell Technologies with Eni.

The supercomputer infrastructure powered by the 2nd generation of Intel Xeon Scalable processors achieves unprecedented computing power levels for the industry, oil and gas sectors and can deliver 52 million billion calculations per second (52 PetaFLOPS).

HPC5 allows the use of generated during production and will further accelerate Research and Development (R&D) projects for the transition to non-fossil energy sources. It will also support the exploration, development and monitoring of oil fields.

In line with the commitment to sustainability from Dell Technologies and Eni, the HPC5 is designed to run at the highest possible energy efficiency, using solar energy generated at the Green Data Center to reduce emissions.

The HPC5 system uses an advanced parallel architecture and supports a hybrid programming model, which allows Eni to process seismic imaging faster and use much more sophisticated algorithms. Utilizing the NVIDIA GPU computing platform, ENI is able to accelerate seismic monitoring applications, as well as develop new AI-based approaches to energy discovery and processing.

The main features of the system are 1.820 Dell EMC PowerEdge C4140 servers, each with two Intel Xeon Scalable Gold 6252 with built-in AI acceleration and 24 cores plus four NVIDIA Tesla v100 GPU accelerators. The servers are connected to a Mellanox InfiniBand HDR network at 200 Gbit / s and use complete unblocked topology to ensure the most efficient connection of servers and data storage system.

"We are proud of our ten-year partnership with Eni, a company with an international reputation for excellence, innovation and sustainability as a key part of its strategy," said Adrian McDonald, EMEA President, Dell Technologies.

"Eni's sustainability mission coincides with Dell Technologies' vision of how the can benefit society and this is just one of the many reasons I am happy that we are a technological partner with Eni in the new supercomputer HPC5. "Through partnership we can achieve increasingly ambitious environmental goals."

“Today Eni presents a supercomputer system with main features that are unique in the industry. This system is able to strengthen and improve even more the highly complex processes that support Eni's people in their activities and, therefore, accelerate our digital transformation. This is an important moment on the road to the energy transition. It is another step forward in the global goal we share with our partners in the field and technology: to bring the energy of tomorrow even closer", said Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni.
