The institution of Black Friday, in which participating stores display very tempting offers on selected products for a limited number of days, is viewed by many consumers as a shopping opportunity.
E.E.K.E. advises consumers to be particularly careful and not to be tempted by seemingly impressive offers. Especially this year, with punctuality taking its toll on family budgets, prioritizing needs and market research are becoming more necessary than ever.
The Union of Consumer Workers of Greece of GSEE, suggests over time the observance of five rules that ensure that consumers will not fall victim to "offers":
- To do market research and check not only the price (original and new) but also the quality of the products. They should also search the internet for the price of the product they are going to choose by code or model number, so they can be sure that the price they have found is the best.
- To delineate their needs and plan with a list the purchases they are going to make, which will keep in line with their personal or family budget avoiding reckless spending
- To be informed of the details and terms of their transaction when purchasing products in installments. Especially for credit card purchases, always be informed of the terms and conditions of the particular purchase. In particular, they should investigate whether and to what extent interest is imposed on this market, since, in this case, the cost of the purchase increases rapidly.
- Specifically for that particular day but also generally for all discount periods, they must take into account that in each price reduction announcement the previous price applied by the supplier during the thirty (30) day period prior to its application is indicated price reduction. A price reduction announcement is any announcement by the merchant that it has reduced the price it charges for a product or service. For example, the price reduction may take the form of:
- Percentage (%), e.g. "20% off"
- Of a specific amount, e.g. "10 euro discount"
- Listing of new (lower) price along with listing of previous (higher) price applied. The previous value may appear in deleted form. B.C. "now 50 euros, before 100 euros" or "50 euros"
- Other advertising practices, such as "buy today without paying VAT", which informs the consumer that the price reduction is equal to the value of VAT (without implying that VAT is not collected)
- Announcements such as "sale" price, "special offers" or "Black Friday deals"
We remind you that price means the actual sales price available to the merchant for the product or service.
5. Always ask for the receipt for the products they have purchased. In case the product is defective and they want to return or exchange it, proof is necessary.
Due to the fact that our purchases on this particular day or in general during discount periods are now, to a large extent, done electronically, we remind safe online shopping rules which we must follow with particular attention.

It would be good for everyone to know that the consumer frenzy created by marketing techniques (Black Friday, opening of shops on Sundays, white nights, etc.) has the effect of subconsciously exerting psychological pressure on the consumer, who feels that he "must" take advantage of the offers by rushing to the shops. In today's context of explosive precision in essential goods, the consumer must make his purchases with prudence and caution.
