Revolution extinguishes fires with sound waves

Scientists have created a miraculous new way to stop fires from spreading through neighborhoods using only sound, reports the New York Post:
Former NASA engineers at Sonic Fire Tech California-based researchers have found that using sound waves can put out fires and could potentially be used to stop another massive fire in Pacific Palisades...

The technology works by targeting oxygen molecules using low-frequency sound waves that vibrate them, stopping the fire from growing. “The sound waves vibrate the oxygen faster than the fuel can use it and interrupt the chemical reaction of the flame,” Remington Hotchkis, Sonic Fire Tech’s Director of Commercialization, told The Post.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department recently tested the equipment using a backpack version, and the results were incredible.

Video shows firefighters battling small bushfires and a fireplace fire with the technology extinguishing it… In the home application, the system would be alerted/activated if there is a fire, sending sound waves through a home’s duct system, essentially extinguishing the fire. The sound waves can travel up to 9 feet from a home, the report notes. The sound is also harmless to pets and people.

The article includes this quote from a company executive given to local news station KMPH: “Our former NASA engineers are rocket scientists and they say it looks like magic, but it’s just physics.”
