The next Chrome update and the end of Ad Blockers

Google is removing Chrome's last remaining workarounds for Manifest V2 extensions, effectively ending support for older ad blockers like the original uBlock Origin.

CyberNews reports a Chromium change that removes support for the “kExtensionManifestV2Disabled” flag, which is referred to as “dead code,” as Chrome no longer supports Manifest V2 extensions. This removal will act as the final phase for many Manifest V2-based ad blocking extensions that were still in use today – the flag was essentially a loophole that allowed these extensions to be used.

A Google employee states in the commit :

“MV2 extensions are no longer allowed in any supported version of Chrome, and we are removing support for them and related features. We cannot provide/maintain this functionality indefinitely due to the complexity and technical debt, as well as the security risks it poses (we have actually found a number of bugs specific to MV2). Of course, other browsers can continue to support it if they wish.”

This will also affect other Chromium-based browsers, although the comment states that “other browsers can continue to support it if they wish.” Microsoft Edge and Opera are likely to follow suit. Chrome 150, due later this month, will remove this flag, while other remnants of Manifest V2 will be removed in v151.
