The next Android will tell you when to replace your battery

The next version of Android looks like it could give you an estimate of your remaining battery capacity, which naturally degrades over time.

A feature that iOS has had for a very long time is finally coming to Android. According to Android Authority Android 14 monitors battery health information, and Android 15 could potentially actually bring this information to users. It could also tell you whether your device's battery has been replaced or not.

With the launch of the Pixel Feature Drop in December 2023, Google introduced a new “battery info” page under Settings > About phone. This page shows the manufacture date and cycle number of the device's battery. Under the hood, Settings pulls this information through new APIs introduced in Android 14.

The date of manufacture and the number of cycles are not the only statistics related to the battery. There are other battery health details such as date of first use, charging policy, charging status and health status that are also available.

State of health is particularly interesting because it is an estimate of the battery's current full charge capacity, expressed as a percentage of the battery's rated capacity. For example, if you have the Pixel 8 and your battery health is measured at 90%, that means its remaining capacity on a full charge is estimated to be around 4118mAh (compared to the nominal 4575mAh).

The Settings app doesn't currently show battery status, but that's set to change in the future as the latest version of the Settings Services app (an extension of the Settings app on the Pixel and other devices), which is on Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2. has a new “battery health” page set to show battery health status.

It also sounds like the Settings app itself will display “tips” to the user when either the battery capacity is low or undetectable, so the user doesn't need to manually check the battery health page.
