Windows 11 version 25H2 is coming

Well, we have good news and bad news. The good news is that Windows 11 25H2 is almost ready, as Microsoft has just pushed it to the Release Preview channel, which acts as the final round of testing before its global release. The bad news is… it’s not very exciting.

If you’ve been following Windows 11 news lately, you’ll know that this isn’t a huge surprise. When the April 25H2 update was first spotted, it seemed pretty limited. It seems like Microsoft is taking a break after the 24H2 update and will use this year’s big update to tidy things up.

In a post on the Windows Insider blog , Microsoft confirms that Windows 11 25H2 will be what’s called a “activation package.” This is when Microsoft updates the current version of Windows with files from a future version, but in an inactive state. When the feature is ready for release, Microsoft “flips the switch” to activate it, which the company claims reduces downtime and the version upgrade is done with a single restart.

What will be included in version 25H2?

The question is better phrased as “what’s going away with 25H2,” as Microsoft hasn’t mentioned what’s being added as much as it has explained what’s being removed. Microsoft has confirmed that 25H2 will remove PowerShell 2.0, the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMIC) command line, and commercial customers will gain the ability to remove preinstalled Windows 11 apps from their PCs.

As mentioned above, this update isn't ready yet. But if you want to try it out and see what's new, you can do so by subscribing to the Release Preview channel . Microsoft says Insiders will be able to download the ISO from its website next week, so stay tuned.
