Anthropic researcher: more than 10% chance that AI will wipe out humanity

A leading security researcher at Anthropic has warned that artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly that he estimates that there is a greater than 10% chance of "annihilating all of humanity" within the next decade.

Evan Hubinger stated in a post on X that the risk from existing models is “low,” but expressed concern that the technology could soon evolve and improve to such an extent that it poses an existential threat to the human species.

The researcher did not elaborate on how he believes AI systems could eventually lead to the extinction of the human race. However, his statements are the latest in a series of increasingly stark warnings about AI as the debate shifts from whether it poses a risk to how big that risk is.

Hubinger's intervention came in response to another post on X by Jacob Coxon, an artificial intelligence researcher who recently left Anthropic and previously worked at OpenAI.

“Neither company is acting responsibly,” he wrote. “Soon, it will be systems with superhuman capabilities, capable of breaching any system, revolutionizing any sector overnight, and gaining real power and resources.”
