ESET guidelines on child protection on social media

ESET: One in three people using the internet is a child, however for the little browsers the it is still an environment fraught with significant risks.

Especially as they spend enough time on social media, children may have to deal with malware and phishing, personal data theft and online bullying.

Since it is practically impossible for a parent to ban or restrict the use of social media in their children, it can at least educate them to be careful. THE ESET collected four basic guidelines for parents concerned about the of their children on social media and looking for effective ways to educate and supervise them.

Let's look at ESET's instructions:

ESET

Correct bases for responsible use of the Internet. The initial explorations that make the θα πρέπει να γίνονται υπό την επίβλεψη των γονιών, με συμβουλές και καθοδήγηση που τα βοηθούν να αναπτύξουν thinking and making better use of the internet. From an early age, it is helpful for children to know that they should think before clicking on any link or button and that they should be wary of people they do not know.

Dialogue and good example. Responsible use can be taught by the right example of parents: being careful how we behave online, remembering that any action online leaves traces, that anything shared or published can potentially stay there forever, and how important it is to protect our data with proper of access. Cultivating dialogue is also very important, because it gives children the opportunity to openly discuss their concerns with parents.

Making technology an ally. The technology itself offers a range of tools that can significantly shield children. Initially, parents need to ensure that the basic safeguards are in place on the devices used by children, that is, the necessary systems and software updates are installed. Also, creating user accounts with special settings and restrictions specifically for children and using parental control tools are designed to help children use the Internet safely and productively. Finally, installing a reliable security suite will greatly help to strengthen cyber defense.

Using social media safely. Default social media privacy settings do not guarantee the safety of any user, much less a child. Parents therefore need to invest time in arranging and explaining to their children if their information will be made public and, if so, what it will be. The use of correct passwords is also very important: children should use unique and strong passwords - at least 10 characters, in uppercase and lowercase characters, a number and a special symbol such as # or @ - and not reveal them to anyone, not even their best friend. Most popular social media also enable two-factor authentication, which contributes significantly to account protection.
