Get ready for the iOS 6.1 jailbreak

Welcome, today will be released the coveted tool for iOS 6.1 Jailbreak. And those of you who are waiting for you and how to "break" your device, then it's good to start preparing.

Before we get started, let's do a little introduction and say (if you do not already know) that the hacker team that has set up the tool is called Evad3rs, the tool will be called evasi0n, it is for iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2 and 6.1, and not will support the following devices:

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod touch 1-3G
  • iPad 1
  • Apple TV 3

So if you own a supported device (such as iPhone 5 and iPad mini) then start with the following steps:

Step 1 - Backup

We'll start with backup of the device. You can do this either via iTunes manually or via iCloud.

To back up through iTunes, open the program, connect to your device and to the left where it will be displayed, right-click and select backup

To do this via iCloud, go to Settings> iCloud> Storage & Copies, and select the option that says iCloud Copy.

While it's more convenient to back up via iCloud, it will take a long time to get it back on the device, so we suggest you do it via iTunes. In addition to having a jailbroken device, do not forget to keep backup from Cydia's packages separately. To do this, you can use the free OpenBackup application that you will find on Cydia or use the paid (but much better) PKGBackup application, also from Cydia.

Having now backed up the backup it's time to upgrade.

Step 2 - Upgrade to iOS 6.1

If you have not already upgraded your device to iOS 6.1 then this is your chance to do so now. You can download the .ipsw file that corresponds to your device to do the upgrade manually, otherwise you can connect your device via iTunes and upgrade by pressing the update button or via OTA (by going to Settings> General> Software Update).

Note: You will upgrade your device automatically via iTunes or OTA only if not is jailbroken. If you find yourself in a version of iOS (like 5.1.1) and you have jailbreak then you will not upgrade it directly, but you will do it manually as we write below. Additionally, we recommend manual upgrading for all devices to be clean on iOS 6.1 and the jailbreak process to last less.

If you decide to do it manually, download the .ipsw file that matches your device:

Those you've already upgraded, or you prefer to do it automatically, are finished, and you can go to step 3, the rest stay here.

To manually install the upgrade via iTunes, open the program, connect the device, select it when it appears on the left and the main window, press "Restore" while keeping the Option button for Mac or the Shift button for Windows.

A window will appear asking for the .ipsw file, browse to the downloaded folder and select it, in my case this is the following:

When selected, click "Open" and the process will start.

Step 3 - Backup and Jailbreak

Now having our device upgraded to iOS 6.1, it's a good idea not to restore the backup before the jailbreak. Though many will definitely have things you need, it's good to wait a while before the jailbreak first and then pass them through the backup so the process of breaking the device is quicker.

    Step 4 - TinyUmbrella

Although this is not a necessary step for the jailbreak, it is good to always do it, no matter whether we do jailbreak or not. TinyUmbrella stores the SHSH of the release that is currently being released and "signed" by Apple. SHSH needs it if you later want to go back to a previous iOS version. For example, by upgrading to 6.1, if I want to go back to 6.0 or 5.1.1 or older, because I keep the SHSH of these releases, I can do it.

SHSH is a unique key to any device Apple is "signing" to upgrade to the most up-to-date operating (in our case 6.1). When a newer version, eg 6.1.1, is released, Apple stops signing SHSH for 6.1, so that one can not come back to that version. Having kept this key through TinyUmbrella, we can "jerk" iTunes by making it believe that Apple is still signing it for the version we want, allowing us to get back to it.

These keys, as we said, are unique to each device, so you can not use another, such as someone you know, and we can store only what Apple is "signing" at this time.

Those you want to save (and recommend it to those who are going to jailbreak and others) can download the application from here and follow these three easy steps:

    1. Open TinyUmbrella
    2. Connect your device
    3. Click the "Save SHSH" button at the top left

Once you are done you are ready and you can close the program. You will not need it again at this time.

As we said at the beginning, we are going to release the jailbreak for iOS 6.1 today and we are ready to welcome it.

Once released, we will be the first to let you know and we will follow a similar guide on how to make the jailbreak and what are the first steps to take.
