Η International Open Access Week 2020 entitled "Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion" will take place, as every year, in the last week of October (19-25 / 10/2020).
The International Week is a global event for open access to research in which institutions and institutions from all over the world participate, as well as individuals, while its organization is coordinated by an international advisory committee. Established by SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) – an international alliance to promote open access to research and education- and its members in 2008.
This year's week is a continuation of the 2018 theme (titled “Designing Foundations for Open Knowledge”), wanting in this way to highlight for the third consecutive year how important it remains to take action to promote justice and integration and the extent to which relevant actions must remain at the center of relevant initiatives.
Issues such as justice, inclusion and diversity must be a constant priority and a constituent element of the community: from how infrastructures are formed, how related discussions are organized to forms of governance, etc. In this context, the International Open Access Week it constitutes a unique opportunity to promote relevant discussions, create networks between and within communities to promote the co-shaping of actions and initiatives.
After all, openness is an important tool for building fairer systems for sharing knowledge. At the same time, however, it is equally important for the global community to understand the barriers and exclusions created by existing structures and how specific issues are promoted. As the effort is focused on the riseorganization of these structures, it is important that there is a commitment to move from discussions to concrete commitments to achieve substantial progress.
