The European Commission is tackling social media addiction for the first time in a battle against TikTok, which could set new design standards for the world's most popular apps.
Brussels has asked the company to change several key features, such as disabling infinite scrolling, setting strict breaks in the time a user spends on the screen, and changing the systems that recommend content to users.
This requirement comes after the Commission found that TikTok's design is addictive for users, especially children.
The fact that the Commission said TikTok should change the basic design of its service is “groundbreaking for a business model fueled by surveillance and advertising,” said Katarzyna Szymielewicz, president of the Panoptykon Foundation, a Polish civil society group.
This doesn't bode well for all other platforms, especially Meta's Facebook and Instagram, both of which are also under investigation for being addictive by design.

Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
