Facebook Container 2 for Firefox: end to third-party tracking

Mozilla announced yesterday an add-on designed to protect privacy. The agency revealed that Facebook Container 2 for Firefox will be enabled by default for new and existing users of its browser to improve privacy and minimize tracking.

Mozilla released an update to the Facebook Container add-on for Firefox on 4 June 2019, which greatly improves user privacy.

Facebook Container 2

The company reports to add-on page:

Prevent Facebook from watching you online. The Facebook Container extension for Firefox helps you control and isolate your Facebook activity from Facebook.

What is he doing;
Facebook Container works by isolating your Facebook identity in a separate container, making it hard for Facebook to track your visits to other third-party cookies.

How does it work;
Once you've installed this extension, your Facebook tabs will be closed, Facebook cookies will be deleted and your Facebook account will be logged out.

The next time you browse Facebook, the site will load into a new tab. The tab will be blue, indicating that you are in the container.
You can log in and use Facebook as usual when inside the Facebook Container. If you click on a non-Facebook link or browse a non-Facebook website on URL, these pages will load outside the container.

Pressing Facebook Share buttons in tabs of other programs s, it will load them inside the Facebook Container. You should be aware that using these buttons transmits information to Facebook about the website from which you shared them.

Which features will not work on other sites?

Because you will only be logged in to Facebook from the container, Facebook's built-in comments and I like tabs outside of the container will not work. This prevents Facebook from linking information about your activity to sites other than Facebook with your Facebook identity.

Also, sites that allow you to create an account or log in through your Facebook credentials will generally not work properly. Because this extension is designed to separate your Facebook usage from use on other sites, this behavior is expected.

Against WHAT Does Facebook Container Protect?

It is important to know that this extension does not prevent Facebook from mismanaging the data it already owns, or allowing others to acquire, about you. Facebook will still have access to what you do while you are at facebook.com, such as Facebook comments, photos you upload, I like, any data you share with Facebook-related apps,

Rather than stop using a service you appreciate, we think you need to have the tools to restrict the data that others can get. This extension focuses on restricting Facebook tracking, but other ad networks may attempt to associate your Facebook activity with your usual browsing experience. In addition to this extension, you can change your Facebook settings, use private browsing, block third-party tracking and cookies, and use the extension Firefox Multi-Account Containers to further limit monitoring.

What data does the Mozilla Foundation receive from this extension?

Mozilla does not collect data from your use of the Facebook Container extension. However, we get the number of times you installed or uninstalled the extension. Find out more

Other Containers
Facebook Container leverages the Containers which is already built into Firefox. When you enable the Facebook Container, you may also see Containers titled Personal, Work, Shopping, and Banking while browsing. If you wish to use multiple Containers, you will have the best user experience if you install the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension. Learn more on our support website.

Known issues
When Facebook is open and you browse to another site using the same tab (by entering an address, performing a search, or clicking a bookmark), the new site will load out of the Container and you will not be able to return to your Facebook browsing using it Back to browser.

NOTE: If you are a Multi-Account Containers user who has already assigned Facebook to a Container, this extension will not work. In an effort to maintain your existing settings and links to the Container, this add-on will not include the extra protection to keep other sites out of your Facebook Container. If you wish to have this extra protection, first unsubscribe facebook.com in the Multi-Account Container extension, and then install this extension.

Which version of Firefox do I need for Facebook Container 2?

This extension works with Firefox 57 or later on computers. Note that it does not work in other probrowsers and does not work in Firefox for mobile devices.

If you think you are using Firefox 57 +, but the setup page notifies you that you are not in a supported browser, you can try installing by choosing or copying and pasting this link: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/latest/facebook-container/platform:2/addon-954390-latest.xpi. (This may be because you have chosen a preference or installed an extension that makes your browser hide the user agent for privacy reasons or for other reasons.)

How does this compare with the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension?
Facebook Container specifically isolates Facebook and works automatically. The extension Firefox Multi-Account Containers is a more general extension that allows you to create containers and specify which sites will open in which containers.
