Facebook: fine 1,2 cm from Spain

The Spanish authority responsible for προσωπικών δεδομένων στην Ισπανία ζητάει από το Facebook να πληρώσει πρόστιμο ύψους 1,2 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ, αφού διαπίστωσε τρεις περιπτώσεις κατά τις οποίες το κοινωνικό δίκτυο συγκέντρωνε by its Spanish users, without informing them of how they will be used.

FacebookThe fact is added to the judgment of a series of legal issues that have accumulated and need immediate resolution from Facebook. According to Mark Scott of Politico, the French, German and Dutch governments are examining how much data Facebook collects and how it uses them, especially those that concern their citizens.

Spain's data protection authority said Facebook's privacy policy contains "general and vague terms" which the social network is comfortable with without the consent of its users.

Facebook is likely to appeal the decision. Previously, he reversed a similar decision in Belgium, arguing that his base in Ireland means that it is subject only to Irish law.

The 1,2 ευρώ αποτελούν φυσικά ψίχουλα για μια εταιρεία που έχει έσοδα μόνο από το 2ο τρίμηνο του 2017, 9,32 δισεκατομμύρια δολάρια.

However, a Facebook spokesman told TNW:

"We know the decision of the DPA, with which we respectfully disagree. While we appreciate the opportunities we have had to convince the DPA of how seriously we take the privacy of people who use Facebook, we intend to make this decision.

"As we made clear to DPA, users choose what information they want to add to their profile and share it with others, such as their religion. However, we do not use this information to target individuals with ads. ”

"Facebook has long complied with EU data protection law through our facility in Ireland. "We remain open to continuing to discuss these issues with the DPA as we work with the Chief Data Protection Officer of Ireland and prepare for the new EU Data Protection Regulation from 2018."
