Most web companies use open source and Linux software. The social network Facebook with its two billion members is no different.
For years, Facebook has not only used open source software, but has also actively contributed to large open source projects. These include the React JavaScript library. The Open Compute Project project, and the cGroup2 container software for Linux.
Well we have good news and bad news: Now Facebook has acquired its membership Linux Foundation at Platinum level. We started with the good, as that means more money to the Linux Foundation fund.
It was expected. THE team open source Facebook has been a member for a long time but now joined the Linux Foundation at Platinum level the highest level.
Here comes the bad news. As a Platinum member, the head of the Open department Source Facebook's Kathy Kam will join the Linux Foundation's board of directors. Kam is a 20 year technical, product management, and developer relations leader with vast experience in open source management. He had previously worked at Google and Microsoft.
Why bad news? Facebook has been criticized for how it manages privacy and for a policy that is not impartial as there are often strong partisan nuances. We hope Facebook's voice does not change the Linux Foundation philosophy.
Otherwise the developers of the company they have proved that they can produce work by participating in large open source projects hosted on the Linux Foundation, such as Presto, GraphQL, Osquery and ONNX.
