The FBI announced on Friday that it had arrested Roger Thomas Clark, who authorities say used the nickname "Variety Jones" and was the "senior adviser" to its creator. Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht.
A press release from the US Prosecutor's Office says Clark was arrested in Thailand on December 3.
The Canadian citizen is charged with multiple counts of conspiracy to target her trading drugs, money laundering, etc.
Silk Road was a secret online marketplace for illegal drugs, hacking services, and other criminal activities. As a business consultant, Roger Thomas Clark reportedly acted as a trusted confidant of Silk Road founder and operator Ross Ulbricht, advising him on all aspects of this illegal businesss, including how to maximize their profits using the threat of violence. Thanks to the investigative work of fellow law enforcement agencies and our international partners, Clark is in custody awaiting US justice.
The press release claims:
Clark further advised Ulbricht on how to conceal his participation, and his profits from Silk Road Drug Market. He helped Ulbricht devise stories that covered his traces, gaining foreign citizenship and offshore bank accounts.
For those unfamiliar, Silk Road started operating in 2011 at Dark Web.
It worked as a hidden service and allowed connections only through Tor. It allowed drug dealing, steroids, arms sales, hacking services and even hired assassins, all under the guise of Bitcoin.
In February, drug-founder Ross Ulbricht was found guilty of seven charges of conspiracy and sentenced to life imprisonment.
