The Fedora team has announced the release of a new distribution snapshot. The Fedora 34 distribution comes with a number of major changes, such as GNOME 40, its replacement by PulseAudio with PipeWire, and the default Btr file system that allows transparent compression.
“Since Fedora Linux 33 brought BTRFS as the default file system for desktop variants, Fedora Linux 34 enables transparent compression for more disk space. This increases the lifetime of flashed media by reducing write amplification for solid-state disks. This compression improves read, write and performance for larger archives, with the potential for significant time savings in workflows. With a foundation for future improvements, we aim to keep adding to these features in future releases.
The desktop audio will change from using PulseAudio to PipeWire for better audio mixing and management streams. PipeWire is better designed to meet the needs of containers and applications released through Flatpaks.”
