Fedora 44 KDE Plasma add X11

Fedora 44 is a dynamic release that removed X11 from the mainline Fedora releases, regardless of how you feel about X.org. I've been using the distribution for years, and as usual I installed the new version 44 wondering what it would be like without X.org and if it would cause me any problems, as I had already tried Wayland and it didn't sit well with me.

I installed the new version 44 over 43 with the commands

sudo dnf system-upgrade download –releasever = 44

and

sudo dnf offline reboot

and after the reboot I am on version 44 but almost nothing worked. I backed up /home and proceeded with a clean install. Everything went well, but Wayland was there and X.org was missing.

When I started adding the applications I've been using for years, the problems started. The xfce4-screenshooter application doesn't work on Wayland, and the Force font DPI setting was missing from the settings.

I need X.org

To add Xorg (X11) for KDE Plasma in Fedora 44, install the plasma-workspace-x11 package via terminal using the command

sudo dnf install plasma-workspace-x11.

X11 may not be officially supported, but it is still available through community-maintained packages (kwin-x11).

sudo dnf install kwin-x11

After installation, log out and select “Plasma (X11)” from the menu on the login screen (you’ll find it in the lower-left corner). This will give you Xorg support, which is not installed by default in the Wayland-first setup of Fedora 44.

Alternatives

Using XWayland: Most X11 applications run on Wayland using xorg-x11-server-Xwayland.
Use a Spin: Use a Fedora Spin with a DE that still supports X11, such as XFCE, Mate, or LXQt.
