Fortnite has more than 100 million players, but many of them use cheaters. So far so good, but lately there have been a lot of malware infections.
The victims? Those who tried to cheat and beat other players.
Since last week, Rainway's streaming shop has seen a growing number Alarms in the log files security. The only common factor for all the alarms was that they all came from people playing Fortnite and followed a certain pattern.
Η company monitored the alarms until the number reached 381.000 users. So he decided to run some tests. The company assumed that some were using some code to cheat the game, and that this code was the cause of the problems.
The team at Rainway searched all the Fortnite cheats around the internet and ran some tests. The results were not good: each of them contained one malware.
The company discovered that the malware, in addition to infecting the cheater user, was also collecting V-bucks, the currency Fortnite uses for in-game purchases. The cheatware also created a backdoor that allowed attacks man-in-the-middle.
The malicious application had over 78.000 downloads and was hosted on many websites. As developers of Fornite seem to have, they need to make their platform more secure as cheaters will not cease to exist and be used by some who do not know what fair-play means.
