For the first time, bots have surpassed human traffic on the internet

The internet has passed an unwelcome milestone: for the first time in history, bots have surpassed human traffic on the internet. The announcement was made by Cloudflare CEO and co-founder Matthew Prince, who said agentic internet traffic is responsible.

Prince said that while he had predicted that bot traffic would surpass humans, he believed it would happen towards the end of 2027. But Cloudflare Radar shows that bots now make up about 56% of total traffic, and that percentage reached 62% in the last week. The CEO said that the transition from human dominance to bot dominance has been happening over the past few months, but is only now becoming apparent.

Cloudflare's regional analysis shows that bot traffic is far from evenly distributed. Gibraltar currently has one of the most extreme cases, with more than 90% of HTTP requests classified as automated.

Singapore and Iran also rank high on the list, with bot traffic accounting for more than three-quarters of requests for each. This doesn’t mean that the regions are full of bot operators. It’s more likely to reflect hosting infrastructure, routing, VPN usage, and other factors that can make automated traffic appear to originate from specific locations.

All of this means that things are changing rapidly. The open web is now flooded with AI agents that move faster than humans, consume more pages than humans, and increasingly decide what people are allowed to see. More than 10% of AI summaries mention AI-generated content.
