Boulder County Sheriff Heidi Prentup said the mother drank the caustic liquid in one of two attempts made by her daughter. Both attempts took place within a week.
On 2 March, the girl put bleach on a coffee at the breakfast she had prepared for her mother, Prentup said.
"The mother noticed the smell of bleach in the coffee and thought that her daughter probably would not have cleaned the cup well," the police statement said.
