What would one look like to you? disc that can store 360TB and keep them forever? Researchers from the University of Southampton have created a five-dimensional glass disk that is not only massive in storage capacity, but can also keep all its contents safe for at least 13.800 billion years.
Data stored on the disk, according to the researchers, can be kept intact even under the most extreme conditions, such as say the end of humanity.
Essentially, the whole innovation is in the way it is registered content on the disc. Traditional discs, CDs or DVDs, store data by writing the information to a surface of glass.
What researchers have done is to write the data not on the glass but in the glass.
So using glass nanostructures, a very small five-dimensional disk can store at least 360TB (terabytes) of data for 13.8 billion years. If you think it is impressive, read below….
Investigators support that such a drive can withstand the most extreme conditions. For example, it can survive temperatures up to 1000 degrees Celsius. According to the scientists, even if the temperature environment is 190 degrees Celsius, the disk has no problem keeping all the data in perfect condition for almost 14 billion years.
