Google appears to be testing a feature that will allow Gmail users to change their name to an @gmail.com address for the first time, according to an official support document. 
The support page is only in Hindi , suggesting a first-time launch in India, and Google says users will “gradually start seeing this option.”
The feature will allow users to use a new @gmail address (with a new username) while maintaining full access to their old one, essentially giving a single account two functional email addresses.
Emails sent to any address will arrive in the same inbox, and existing data in Drive and Photos will not be affected.
Users who change their username will not be able to register another new address for 12 months. Google has not officially announced the feature.
If you change your username, you will be able to sign in to Google services such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Play or Drive with your old or new email address.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
It's been a while, some others have had this feature (aliases) for many years!
