Gmail has quietly entered a new era. With the launch of features powered by Gemini, your inbox is no longer just a list of emails, but an AI-powered workspace that summarizes conversations, suggests replies, and turns messages into tasks.
But this convenience has also caused a lot of anxiety. Many users are wondering if Google's artificial intelligence reads their emails. The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.
What is Gemini and why is it in Gmail?
Gemini is Google's leading AI system, designed to understand and create text, images, and code. It already powers features in Search, Docs, Maps, and smart home devices. In early 2026, Google began integrating Gemini more deeply into Gmail, turning it into an active assistant rather than a passive inbox.

Does Google read your emails?
Not like a human would. Google says that no employees at the company read your Gmail messages because of Gemini. However, the AI requires read access to your emails to function.
This isn't new—Gmail has long scanned your messages to suggest calendar events and other things. What's different now is the depth. Gemini doesn't just detect keywords, it also analyzes the content to understand meaning, urgency, and intent.
This is what makes some users uncomfortable.
Are your emails used to train Google's Artificial Intelligence?
Google says that Gmail content is not used to train its AI models by default. However, there is one important caveat:
If you connect Gmail to other Google services or use certain AI-powered search features, you may provide permission for limited data use to improve those services.
What about ads – Does Gmail target you based on emails?
No. Google ended email ad targeting in Gmail in 2017. The ads you see today are driven by your broader activity, like searches, YouTube usage, and account-level behavior – not the content of your messages.
Although Gemini processes the text of emails, Google says it does not use this information to personalize ads.
How to disable Gemini in Gmail
If you prefer to have your inbox without artificial intelligence, Google allows you to disable it.
On a computer:
Open Gmail
Click the settings gear icon
Select “Show all settings”
On the General tab, find Smart Features
Disable them and save changes.
On mobile:
Open the Gmail app
Go to Settings – Data Privacy
Turn off Smart Features and Smart Workspace Features
If you're using a work or school account, these options are probably controlled by an administrator.
Where else is Gemini found?
Even if you turn it off in Gmail, Gemini is still present in the Google ecosystem. It appears in search summaries, in Chrome, in Docs, in Maps, and as a standalone app on mobile and the web. Gmail is just one part of a much larger AI development.
