Linux Mint is going to be late with its next release. The development team has already stated that we won't see a new version until Christmas 2026, a much longer period than people are used to. But instead of leaving users stuck with old software, especially those with newer hardware, it's doing something quite practical.
Meet the new HWE ISOsThese updated installation images are intended to improve hardware compatibility without forcing a completely new release. Linux Mint 22.3 was originally released with kernel 6.14 in January. Now, these refreshed ISOs come with kernel 6.17, which works much better on newer machines.
This is more important than it sounds. Anyone who has tried to install a Linux distribution on brand new hardware knows the problem. Wi-Fi may not work, graphics may act strangely, and sometimes, basic things just don't work together. A new kernel can make all the difference.
To be clear, these are still Linux Mint 22.3. Nothing changes in the version number. They are simply updated installation images that include newer components. The Mint team says they are fully tested and stable.
What's important here is the approach. Rather than rushing out a new version just to keep up the good work, Linux Mint focuses on stability while ensuring that new installations don't use outdated software.
In the future, the distribution's plan is to continue releasing these HWE ISOs whenever a newer kernel is released. It's a very good middle ground.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
