Google Chrome will protect selected users from dangerous downloads with the help of Advanced Protection Program or simply APP, which was originally launched by 2017.
AAP's goal was to provide users with a high likelihood of becoming targets of cyberattacks, such as journalists, activists and politicians, in the arsenal necessary to remain protected when accessing their Google accounts.
But if you look at how threats are evolving, 2017 seems to be a long way off. So Google is now expanding its program to include Google Chrome, stopping malicious downloads that could be used in complex cyber attacks.
"Advanced Protection Program users who have enabled synchronization in Chrome will automatically begin to have stronger protection against dangerous downloads on the web for files that contain malware. Advanced Protection users have already benefited from malware protection in Gmail Security Services. ” they said Shuvo Chatterjee, Product Manager, APP, and Kiran Nair, Product Manager, Chrome.
But the attackers have shifted their strategies to continue threatening Advanced Protection users, from emails to drive-by downloads, to unknowingly download harmful software to their devices.
Users using the program will begin to see a warning (shown in the image above) that a particular download is being "blocked by Advanced Protection".
So there will be options to discard the download or keep the file, with a "Learn more" message that will display additional information about the reasons why the download was blocked.
The new service does not require a user-friendly change, as the feature is automatically activated regardless of the platform on which Google Chrome is running.
On the other hand, what you need to do is enable browser synchronization to allow the Advanced Protection System to perform checks and block malicious downloads.
