According to a Guardian publication, Google is testing solar drones at Spaceport America, a facility in New Mexico that previously hosted Virgin Galactic.
The project, codenamed "SkyBender", aims to test prototype transceivers and drones that use millimeter wave radio transmissions.
Mln transmissions use the frequency of 28 GHz and although smaller than current 4G technologies, speeds are incredibly fast.
Theoretically, milimeter wave technology can carry multiple gigabit data per second, up to 40 times faster than current 4G LTE systems.
To deliver millimeter wave technology, Google is testing high-flying drones. It's a challenge, and Google is reportedly trying different ones technologies, such as high-tech antennas.
At present, it is very much a theoretical project.
The SkyBender project is part of a small Google Access team that has also undertaken Project Loon, another experiment in providing Internet high speed.
Google has permission by the FCC to continue these tests until July.
