Google is expected to announce a significant investment to create a Data Center in our country. The company is expected to reveal its plans for Greece next Thursday in the presence of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Digital Governance, with the information referring to a large investment in a data center.
It should be noted that although Greece occupies a privileged geographical position in the Eastern Mediterranean, the prospect of becoming a data center hub began to be visible in the last 3 to 4 years. In our "neighborhood", significant investments in Data Centers have been attracted by Marseille, while in the wider region, in terms of international capacity, Istanbul and Sofia have become important hubs.
Today in Greece there are 18 data centers, most (10) in Athens and Thessaloniki (5). The services they provide include web hosting, co-location, application hosting and management, data backup and disaster recovery, business continuity, as well as a range of cloud computing services, including infrastructure as a service and software as a service.
However, not only global giants are planning investments in Data Centers. The Greek company Lancom has two DCs (one in Athens and one in Thessaloniki) and is proceeding with a third in Heraklion, Crete.
Data centers are now considered critical infrastructure as data grows at an exponential rate.
According to a survey by IDG Research Services with the subject: "Digital Infrastructure: The foundation for economic recovery and competitiveness", carried out last year on behalf of Lamda Hellix for every 1 euro of investment in a neutral multi-tenant data center (neutral multi-user data centers) yields 8,23 euros of added value to the Greek economy.
