Google is shutting down Stadia, a cloud gaming service. The service will remain live for players until January 18, 2023.
Google says it will refund those who purchased Stadia hardware through the Google Store, as well as all games and add-on content purchased from the Stadia Store.
Google says these refunds will be completed by mid-January.
"A few years ago, we launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia," Stadia VP and GM Phil Harrison said in a blog post.
“And while Stadia's approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technological foundation, it didn't win over the users we expected. So we made the difficult decision to end the Stadia streaming service."
Employees of the Stadia team will be distributed to other parts of the company.
Harrison also mentioned that Google sees opportunities to apply Stadia's technology to other parts of Google, such as YouTube, Google Play and its AR efforts. The company also plans to make the technology available "to our industry partners, which aligns with how we see the future of gaming."
