Google Maps the update of the decade

Google announced that it is releasing the biggest navigation update to Google Maps (Google Maps) for a decade, which, of course, revolves around artificial intelligence features powered by Gemini models. One of the highlights is the new Ask Maps feature, which brings a chatbot-like experience to Google Maps.

As the name suggests, Ask Maps can answer complex natural language questions and generate customized answers based on real-time information. It includes relevant photos, route visualizations, and analyzes information from Google's massive database of over 300 million places and community reviews from over 500 million contributors.

Google said the chatbot personalizes its responses based on your saved Maps information and past searches. It learns your dining preferences when you search for nearby restaurants. You can make restaurant reservations, save suggested places to a list, or share them with others.

Google has updated the navigation experience with a new feature called Immersive Navigation, which builds on the existing Google Maps feature called Immersive View.

Its latest update includes redesigned 3D graphics that highlight critical road features like terrain, traffic lanes, and crosswalks. Voice guidance has been updated to sound more natural, and buildings become transparent as you move to navigate turns or lane changes.

For alternative routes, Google Maps will let you know with details, like whether an alternative route is longer with less traffic or faster with tolls. Google will use community-driven updates to notify you of real-time traffic along your route.

Navigation will also preview your destination and surrounding areas using Street View and offer parking suggestions. It will show the main entrance to a building and which side of the street you should be on as you approach your destination.

Google said the feature has begun rolling out in the US, adding that its availability will expand in the coming months to eligible Android/iOS devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with built-in Google apps.
