Google Maps will soon give you the option to store your location data on your device instead of in the cloud.
Next year, Google plans to change things by default saving your Timeline directly to your device instead of the cloud. You'll also have the option to delete bits or the entire info folder whenever you want and turn off location history entirely.
When you switch devices and want to keep your data, you'll always have the option to back it up to the cloud. Google assures us that it will encrypt them.
Another important update is the shorter default time before your location history is automatically deleted.
Soon, when you enable location history, the default auto-delete time will be three months. In the past, it was 18 months by default.
Google Maps will allow something more. Soon you will be able to erase all traces of your travels. If you have a favorite place and want to keep it, you'll be able to keep it in the app, and you'll also be able to delete searches, directions, visits, or shares. This handy feature will be rolling out to Maps for Android and iOS in the coming weeks.
Finally, you'll soon be able to click on the blue dot on the map to see your Location History and Timeline at a glance. It will allow you to modify what you share and save in Maps without having to go into settings. For now, the blue dot only gives you a few neat shortcuts for parking saving and location sharing.
