Google Search no longer provides clean results by default. AI summaries, sponsored listings, and clutter on the results page dominate. But Google still offers powerful tools that can turn up high-quality information if used correctly.
The following search practices focus on reducing “noise” and forcing Google to return to displaying traditional results.
1. Removing artificial intelligence from search results
Google is increasingly displaying summaries and answers generated by artificial intelligence at the top of results.
Adding it -ai in a search query often removes results that are derived from artificial intelligence. Browser extensions designed to hide features powered by Gemini can also remove AI summaries from the page. These options work best in desktop browsers rather than in the Google Search app.
2. Return to traditional web results
Google still supports a website view that removes cards, videos, shopping results, and artificial intelligence dashboards.
After performing a search, selecting web from the menu returns a list of standard links.
3. Limit searches by website or domain
The website: Google is one of the most effective ways to improve the quality of results.
use it site: iguru.gr to search within a specific website
use it site:.govOr site:.edu to prioritize domains with this ending
Use country domain endings like website:.gr or site:.uk to limit results to regional
4. Search for specific file types
Searching by file format can completely bypass low-quality websites.
Its use filetype:pdf, filetype:ppt ή filetype: doc helps locate reports, research papers, manuals, and official documents. This is especially useful for technical, academic, or government searches.
5. Use Google's built-in filters
Below the search bar, Google includes filters such as News, Images, Tools, and more. The Tools menu allows you to filter results by date and can help you see newer or older content without having to retype the query.
Advanced Search provides even more filters, allowing users to exclude terms, restrict languages, or search for exact phrases without relying solely on operators.
6. Reverse Image Search for Verification
Google Search allows users to upload images directly. This can be used to:
- Finding the original source of an image
- Identifying visually similar images
- Detect reused photos which are usually associated with scams or fake profiles
Reverse image search is often more reliable than text-based searches for verification.
7. Block Low-Quality Results with Extensions
Content blockers can automatically remove sponsored listings and visual clutter from Google Search pages.
Extensions like uBlock Origin they can hide ads, shopping widgets, and other distractions, restoring a cleaner search experience without manual filtering.
8. Mark Trusted Websites as Preferred Sources
Google has a preferred sources feature that shows results from selected websites. When enabled, articles from trusted publishers appear more prominently in search results and news sections.
Google Search Requires Control
Google Search has never stopped being useful, but it no longer works well without intervention. Filters, operators, and blockers are now essential for finding reliable information.
Using the above techniques can significantly reduce AI noise, unwanted content, and irrelevant results.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
