Google is discontinuing POP3

Google cancels support for the POP3 (Post Office Protocol) method. This means that Gmail will no longer be able to retrieve emails from third-party accounts using the old POP3 method. The “Retrieve messages from other accounts” option in Gmail will no longer be available.

The company, on the other hand, makes the IMAP process its standard and recommends searching for the corresponding settings for changing IMAP in the documentation of the respective mail provider and changing the protocol from POP to IMAP.

According to Google, the change only affects recovery methods. This means that emails that have already been synced will remain in your Gmail account.

The company also says that users of work or school accounts should contact their administrators, who can help with a potential migration to Google Workspace.

The news was welcomed by those with modern email workflows, but there were also many who expressed disappointment. Among them are those old enough to have Yahoo addresses, because automatic forwarding is a premium option available only to Yahoo Mail Plus users as of 2021.

Also, those using POP3 as a migration tool were not impressed. Except for using a tool like Imapsync, which will now apparently require a desktop client PC to act as a POP-to-IMAP bridge, instead of Gmail doing all the work.
